How to Write a Business Plan

How to write a business plan?  That is most commonly the first question one asks after realizing that to run a successful business one needs a solid business plan.  Such a business plan represents a sort of blueprint for your business since it analyzes and forecasts all the important aspects of it.  Much of the guesswork is thus taken out of the equation and once you have prepared a good business plan, one that has all the important parts well worked out you can be fairly sure that you have before you a good picture of the future of your business.

But of course to achieve that you must first learn how to write a business plan.   A business plan is normally composed of the following parts:

1.     Executive Summary

2.     The Description of the Business

3.     Product (or Service)

4.     Market Analysis

5.     Strategy and Implementation

6.     Management

7.     The Financial Plan

These are of course just the main chapter headings and they are usually, as they well should be, further separated into sub-chapters, more about which will be looked at in the upcoming posts.

The additional components of a business plan are:

-       The Title Page

-       The Index

-       The Tables and Illustrations Index

-       Bibliography

-       Appendices

Apart from giving the business owner a good blueprint or map for starting the business they had in mind, business plans are most commonly also used to get funding for a project from banks or other financial institutions.  If you are just writing a business plan for yourself then it perhaps does not need to be very detailed, but if your are going to use it to get investors then you should definitely learn how to write business plan yourself. Of course, there are various business plan services offered my many firms, but the whole thing is not too complicated to do yourself, once you have mastered the basics.

 

Even if you are not going to be using the business plan to attract investors, there could still be a variety of other potential users and readers of your business plan, such as the employees, owners, suppliers, customers, experts and others. You should therefore learn how to write a business plan in such a way that each of these potential readers is supplied with the information that they are looking for and that is useful to them.

And keep in mind that he most important reason for writing a business plan is to give you, the entrepreneur a picture of the potential of your business idea, in terms of whether it will be a success or a failure.  You can never know for certain, of course, but a good business plan can still give you a fairly good estimate.  So before embarking on a new business venture first learn how to write a business plan, then write it according to the guidelines and after the idea is proven to have merit implement it.  And good luck!
